2020年，以荷蘭為根據地的藝術家Lara，為了碩士學位製作，進行關於自己家族的田野調查。透過離散各地的親戚，他蒐集到許多相片、地圖和物件，其中包含一塊具百年歷史的織紋桌巾。1911年，Mordko Bongard（作者Lara Bongard的曾祖父）為了逃避屠殺，渡河離開故鄉，桌巾跟著他，開啟了Bongard家族的流亡。⁣⁣

Lara每次拜訪親戚，都會受邀用餐。在食物烹調和共享之間，意第緒（Yiddish）民俗傳說、神話、家族故事就沿著桌邊展開。這些史料的採集，終究超出了追溯自己家族樹的本意，而延伸、建成了烏克蘭（Ukrain，俄語語意為邊界之地）地區猶太人流亡的記憶空間。⁣⁣桌巾連結世代記憶，從百年前的餐桌跨越至今。因此，書中除了史料文件，更穿插許多餐桌上的風景及猶太曆法和習俗的介紹，期間也不乏筆調跳躍的插畫、如同信手紀錄的備忘字跡。⁣⁣
