A Happy Occasion
by Ang Xia Yi

A Happy Occasion is her first book of fabric compositions with archival photographs by her grandfather, Mr. Goon documenting the family’s joyous birthday celebrations in the early 1970’s to the late 1980’s with cakes specially made for different occasions. The fabric book is made out of an assortment of domestic and commercially available textiles from the early 2010’s to 2023 mainly using cotton as the base of each individual page.

The idea for A Happy Occasion is based on a Louise Bourgeois children’s book by Fausto Gilberti. Whenever she felt lost and deflated the children’s book helped the author navigate life’s ups and downs. The simplicity and ease of the book inspired this artist publication.
