1962 年，71 歲的退役軍人 Joseph E. Yoakum（1891–1972）做了一個啟發他動筆創作的夢，便開始了每天畫畫的習慣，並在接下來的 10 年餘生內繪製了大約 2000 幅作品。
 
Yoakum 出生貧困，年輕時便離家，曾加入馬戲團，輾轉於多個馬戲團工作，周遊國內外，同時也發掘了世界各地的地貌，或許就是這些經歷，成為了他日後創作的根基。
 
初將所見轉譯紙上，Yoakum 便迅速發展出屬於他獨特的視覺語言。與當時芝加哥本地的其他藝術家如：黑人藝術運動（Black Arts Movement）或新興的芝加哥意象派（Chicago Imagist）的創作者們截然不同。他的作品多以圓珠筆、彩色鉛筆、粉彩和水彩完成，描繪風景外，亦在畫面上直接標註地名。作品不僅展現了他國內外的旅行經歷，也反映了他對大自然富有詩意的眼光。
