The still-life floral arrangements that comprise florist Simone Gooch and photographer Derek Hernderson’s collaborative project both expound and subvert the loaded historical and aesthetic potentials of its central subject matter. In 2019 they worked together with Matthews Nurseries Ltd. – a multi-generational family rose farm in New Zealand – to source, select, and cut the many unique rose varieties that appear in this book. The results are quiet yet spectacular, poetic yet expressive, with Henderson capturing Gooch’s highly sculptural and unconventionally elegant floral signature with casual warmth and formalist precision.
