城市高樓的陰影裡，一棵野生的木瓜樹下停了一隻鳥，牠的身形圓潤、色澤如土，挺立身體的模樣像極了樹上的木瓜。黑冠麻鷺，人們常稱牠為地瓜或大笨鳥，平時在城市裡悠然自得。而就在某個偶然的午後，牠凜然站立於結實累累的木瓜樹下，在光影交錯之間我們彷彿在這兩者之間看見了相似的一面。
本書以黑冠麻鷺作為主要凝視與談論的對象，並仿照人們對黑冠麻鷺取小名的邏輯，從外觀的「相似形」出發，以「木瓜鳥」作為新暱稱之，進而衍生攝影、三行詩、觀察筆記等方法，去描繪一種承載人們太多投射的鳥類。同時也回扣本社前作《城市遊牧木瓜圖集》對於臺灣木瓜的探索，將二者並置觀看，在兩方逐步與城市共存的身姿中，思索其因歷史、生態變遷而產生的多種身份與意義。
